Cleaning Stainless Steel

When you clean your stainless steel it doesn't have to be an overly complicated process.  Here are some quick tips on keeping it in shiny clean shape.

Make Your Stainless Steel Sparkle

Just about everything you can use in your kitchen comes in stainless steel these days.  While it is a great look for your appliances, utensils, cookware and accessories there is a little extra care to be taken to keep these items shining and clean.  Here are some great tips on how to make your stainless steel sparkle.

• Dab some olive oil on a cloth and clean your stainless steel sink with it, then use a clean, dry cloth to wipe the sink clean.  Make sure you get any water spots that may show up while you do this. 
  
• Stains on cookware can be removed using club soda.
  
• Rub any utensils and cutlery that have spots and stains on them with vinegar.  Rinse off any flatware immediately after eating acid or salty foods to prevent stains.

Now there are other problems you may encounter with stainless steel items that need more attention.  For example, if you have just purchased a stainless steel mixer; and the label(s) won’t come off, soak the item in warm water; rub it with a soapy cloth.  Voila! Label on; label off. 

What if you've got grease? Mix together ammonia and ware water and soak your cookware in this mixture.  You may also come across rust stains, to get rid of this you will have to use a cleaner, and on a regular basis.

When cleaning your stainless steel items, here are some tips so you don't damage them:

- Don't use steel wool to clean
- Never leave cookware on high heat for long periods of time as it can discolor

There are many products today for your kitchen in stainless steel and you'll want to check with the manufacturers instructions as well to see what they recommend for cleaning.  There are also many cleaning methods out there so try to choose the one that is less abrasive and avoid toxic chemicals when at all possible.  Keeping your stainless steel in sparkling shape will be well worth the effort when you extend there life by taking proper care.
